RESIST DOPAMINE

PURPOSE

In 1994, on a talk show, Fred Rogers said he was worried about us. Not angry. Worried. He said we had become much more interested in information than wonder, in noise rather than silence. Then he asked a question nobody on television has ever really answered: how do we encourage reflection?

This brand is one small answer.

Dopamine is not the enemy. It’s a messenger in your brain, and it’s part of how you want things, learn things, and get up in the morning. You wouldn’t survive a day without it. Nobody should try to quit it, and nobody can.

But wanting can be farmed. Every feed refreshes just for you. Every video queues up the next one. Every red badge is a little bell, rung by a machine that profits when you look. None of that is an accident. Some of the smartest people alive are paid to make sure you never get a quiet minute.

So the word on the hat is not quit. It’s resist.

Resisting is smaller than quitting, and harder, because it never ends. It looks like leaving your phone in the other room. Like sitting in the car for a minute after you park, in the quiet, before you go in. Like being bored on purpose and letting the boredom do its work. Like giving yourself time to think, which used to be free, and is now the most contested resource on earth.

You will lose some days. Everyone does. Losing a day is not failing, it’s Tuesday. Resistance was never about a perfect record. It’s about which direction you’re leaning.

That’s why this is a hat and not an app. An app would ping you about your mindfulness. The hat just sits there, all day, saying two words. To you, mostly. Sometimes to a stranger, who asks. Then you get to talk about all of this with a real person, out loud, which is about the most anti-feed thing two people can do.

This is not a program. There is no streak to keep, no level to reach, nothing to check every day. There is a direction to lean, a reminder you can wear, and one minute of silence, any time you want it.

Mister Rogers asked how we encourage reflection.

Wear the answer.

The minute is here.
